New Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 and E 53 to launch new 53-series, which sits below range-topping 63 variants in line-up

Mercedes-AMG has bridged the gap between its hottest 63 variants and Mercedes’ standard models with a new ‘53-series’ model line-up. Featuring 48V mild-hybrid tech, the new engines will be added to the range later this year.

The new motor designation will be introduced on the latest CLS saloon, plus the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet range. All three models use a brand new 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, featuring two turbos: a traditional exhaust gas charger, and a new 48V electric compressor, the latter a Mercedes first.

The new motor develops 429bhp and 520Nm of torque, with an ‘EQ Boost’ electric starter-generator able to add 21bhp and 250Nm of torque when moving off or to fill in the power gap until the turbocharger has spooled up. The result, Mercedes claims, is instant response and faster acceleration.

Featuring a nine-speed automatic gearbox, the CLS 53 4MATIC is capable of 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and a 168mph top speed, with the optional Driver’s Package removing the speed limiter. The E 53 4MATIC Coupe manages the sprint in 4.4 seconds and the Cabriolet completes the dash in 4.5 seconds. In addition, the hybrid system also allows the 53 models to ‘glide’ with the engine off under very light throttle loads, while stop/start is said to be ‘virtually imperceptible’.

The tech improves the overall efficiency of the powertrain as a result, with the E 53 promising 33mpg economy and emitting 200g/km of CO2.

All the models also feature AMG-specific styling and equipment enhancements. UK prices for each variant will be announced later this year.
