SsangYong has released the first official image of its new Musso pick-up ahead of a European debut at the Geneva Motor Show. It's due to arrive in UK dealers in the middle of 2018.
Although the Mitsubishi L200 rival is called 'Rexton Sports' in its home market of South Korea, it will adopt the Musso name in Europe, replacing the existing model. The pick-up is based heavily on the new Rexton large SUV, using the same platform and much of its bodywork.
From the rear doors forward it's visually identical to the Rexton, while it's expected to retain the same interior design and technology, too. It also uses the traditional ladder frame chassis favoured by its rivals, allowing a competitive 3.5-tonne towing capacity and one-tonne payload limit.
The new Musso will make use of the same 178bhp 2.2-litre four cylinder diesel as the Rexton. It's likely to be auto-only for now, like its SUV sibling, while the Musso is expected to shun the dated leaf spring rear suspension set-up in favour of coil springs.
SsangYong bosses are deciding whether to bring a version of the Musso with a longer loadbay to the UK, and single or crew cab variants could be offered at a later date. No details of pricing have been released yet, though a SsangYong spokesperson claimed it would remain "at the value end" of the pick-up market.
